The Turtle Island Quartet

"It must have been like this when Beethoven was taking Vienna by storm – the exhilaration of seeing the future of classical music unfold before your eyes and ears."

– St. Louis Post-Dispatch

David Balakrishnan, Alex Hargreaves, Malcolm Parson, Benjamin von Gutzeit.

The Turtle Island Quartet (known as the "Turtle Island String Quartet" before the 2007 release of A Love Supreme: The Legacy of John Coltrane is a San Francisco Bay Area based jazz string quartet formed in 1985 and still actively touring worldwide and recording as of 2016. They are now celebrating their 15th album, "Confetti Man", showing once again a great jazz rhythmic sensibility.

They are the the first string quartet to achieve artistic and commercial success integrating classical music to jazz improvisation. They also play with multiple other musical styles, including  Bluegrass, European classical music, funk, jazz, Latin American music, and Indian classical music.
The title piece of the Confetti Man recording, a two movement work by group founder David Balakrishnan, has been nominated for a 2016 grammy in the Instrumental Composition category.

Best of Joni Mitchell

“An artist needs a certain amount of turmoil and confusion.”
- Joni Michell

Joni Mitchell's 1995 self-portrait for the cover of her album "Turbulent Indigo", one of twenty album covers she painted herself

Maria Papova described Joni Mitchel to the Brain Pickings as an "undoubtedly one of the most original and influential musicians of the past century [sec. XX], as well as an enormously talented painter". Jewel described Joni Mitchel to the Rolling Stone magazine as icon, much more than a star. She is still unknown to most people but, if you have never heard her, it is surely worth a try. After all, they must have given her 8 Grammy awards and seven more nominations for a reason...

Joni Mitchell by Gerard DuBois

For those who know Mitchell and for those that are now curious about her, there is a beautiful animated interview of Joni Mitchell:

My favorite songs by Tom Petty (and the Heartbreakers)

Tom Petty

I have to admit, I only knew 3 songs from Tom Petty (Free Fallin' included) until very recently, when I listened to an album by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers with Lauren from Twenty Something Living. And I immediately though: "Wow, every single song from this guy and his band is BETTER than Free Fallin'!"

I have a long way to go before I can say I'm a connoisseur of Tom Petty and Tom Petty. But I'm making this playlist as part of the process of getting to know their songs a little better and maybe you will enjoy listening to some of this tunes as I think they are absolutely great (even their deep cuts are good).

Best (i.e., the ones I like) of Tom Petty (and the Heartbreakers)
